The Qualifications for Receiving the Aid & Attendance Benefit

The United States Department of Veterans Affairs has established minimum requirements for veterans and their spouses to be eligible for the Aid & Attendance Benefit. You or your spouse may qualify if you:

  • Served a minimum of 90 days of active duty or one day at war.
  • Received an honorable discharge.
  • Were married to the veteran at the time of their passing.
  • Need assistance with two or more daily activities.
  • Are 65 years old or disabled.

There must be proof that veterans served in one or more of the following conflicts within the following time periods:

  • World War II: If you served between December 7th, 1941, and July 26th, 1947, you may be eligible.
  • Korean Conflict: Includes veterans who served between June 27th, 1950, and January 31st, 1955.
  • Vietnam Era: Includes those who served between February 28th, 1961, and May 7th, 1975. Veterans who served in the Republic of Vietnam qualify if they served between August 5th, 1964, and May 7th, 1975.
  • Persian Gulf War: You qualify if your service date began on August 2nd, 1990. An end date is determined by the Presidential proclamation of law.
